Esa Pietilä, tenor sax Iro Haarla piano, vintage analog synths Uffe Krokfors, bass Markku Ounaskari, drums
The “4 STREAMS” was founded in 2008, after pianist Iro Haarla (ECM) had visited few times as special guest with Esa Pietilä Trio, which has performed the international festivals for many years with success. There was an obvious and collective decision made by everybody in the trio that it will be musically very inspiring and fruitful to form a steadily working quartet with Iro.
“4 STREAMS” has performed at Scandinavian festivals & clubs and will continue it´s journey performing now the international festivals. The name “4 STREAMS” describes how the four musical streams of each player join beautifully together in the free / avantgarde expression & sound of the group - to form an extraordinary caleidoscopic flow of rhythmic – harmonic - melodic richness.
The music of “4 STREAMS” is composed, but it has a lot of collective improvisations on the moment too. Iro Haarla´s expressive playing of the piano and use of the old vintage synths brings extra colours and dimension to the sound of the quartet. The spontaneity of the players and their multidirectional rhythmic counterpoint lines, melodic contours and textures unites the music into a one big symphony and flow of improvisation. A unique sound with tight interplay."
The quartet did it´s premiere at Tampere Jazz Happening 2008, oct. 30th 2008, and has after that performed eg. in Stockholm, Madrid, Helsinki etc. See video here
